Summer Intensives

For students ages 10-18

Previous experience and audition required for ages 14 -18.

Intensives include a full week of all day training for one to three weeks and culminate in a performance for levels 5-7.

Level 6/7 | ages 14-18

June 3-7; 10-14; 17-21 Advanced Levels 6 and 7, with a performance at Crosstown on June 22 Guest Teachers and performers include Movement Migration, Kim Jones Director with Blakeley White McGuire, Master Teacher and former principal of the Martha Graham Company and Pablo Fransisco Ruvalcaba Tovar.

Kim Jones is an Associate Professor of Dance at UNC Charlotte, a régisseur for the Martha Graham Resource Center, danced with the Martha Graham Dance Company and is well known for her work with historic modern dances. Most recently, choreographer Paul Taylor offered Tracer (1962), a collaboration with the artist Robert Rauschenberg (set and costumes), as the subject of a scholarly reconstruction by Kim. Tracer has been performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City in September 2017. In 2013, Kim reconstructed Martha Graham’s Imperial Gesture (1935), which is now on tour with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Both reconstructed works were featured in the Sunday edition of The New York Times. Kim has also restaged Graham’s Primitive Mysteries (1931), Panorama (1935) and Steps in the Street (1936), with funding from the NEA American Masterpieces grant. Kim is currently in London for the 2018/2019 academic year serving as the resident Director at Kingston University. She looks forward to returning stateside to teach Memphis student Artists!

Blakeley White McGuire is a critically acclaimed, award winning dance performer and teacher. She embodies the iconic lead roles of modern dance, most notably as Principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company (2002 - 2016, 2017). She has performed on the world’s greatest stages including Carnegie Hall, Metropolitan Opera, Beijing Opera, Theatre du Chatelet, Sadler’s Wells, Hollywood Bowl, Teatro Greco di Siracusa and the Herodion. Blakeley has created original works for The Museum of Arts and Design, Downtown Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow’s INSIDE/ OUT, The Art Mill, the Key West Modern Dance Festival and Rivertown Artists Workshop. Her writings expressing the 21st-century dancer experience have been published by The Dance Enthusiast, Dance Films Association, The Huffington Post, Dance Magazine and Performance Research Journal, U.K.. Kim first worked with New Ballet staging Martha Graham's Lamentation and Serenata Morsica in partnership with the Buckman St Mary's and the National Endowment for the Arts and returned to stage Graham's Panorama on New Ballet students with Kim Jones.

A former principal of José Limon, Francisco Ruvalcaba, a native of San Diego, CA, has toured with the Lincoln Center Institute, El Festival Nacional é Internacional de Danza en México, and the Innsbrook Festival of Ancient Music. A graduate of The Juilliard School, Ruvalcaba performed the works of José Limón, Paul Taylor, Mark Morris, Jirí Kylián, Benjamin Harkarvy and Agnes De Mille.

At least 6 yrs. dance experience required with three years experience on pointe

Tuition is included for registered New Ballet Ensemble students.

Level 5 | ages 12-15

June 3-7; 10-14 Intermediate Level 5 AND CityDance, with an in studio performance June 14

Level 5 includes pointe, modern and composition, hip hop and West African

Classes include Ballet, Modern, and pointe technique. They also share West African, Modern, Hip Hop, dance composition and choreography classes with CityDance. Students will have exposure to the Modern Dance artists for Movement Migration (see above).

 At least 4 yrs. dance experience at least one semester beginning pointe

Tuition is included for registered New Ballet Ensemble students.

Level 4 | ages 10-13

June 24-28 - Level 4 dancers ages 9-11

Ballet, Modern and Jazz! Pointe work is not incuded at this level.

Tuition is not included for registered New Ballet Ensemble students.
