Fall Registration FAQs

New Ballet is looking forward to reopeneing our studios to new and returning students this September. We know you likely have many questions regarding reopening, and we want to assure you that the safety of our students, families, faculty, and staff are our top priority. We've outlined some frequently asked questions below, and you may review our re-opening safety protocols here.

Will New Ballet Ensemble & School be open for live, in-studio dance classes this fall?

Yes! Classes will begin September 8, and run through the week of December 14th. To prepare for fall classes, we piloted in-studio classes in July and applied what we learned to our programming for the fall. Many safety protocols have been adopted to ensure the safety of our students, families, and staff. Review all safety protocols here!

What safety measures is NBE taking to ensure a safe environment in the studios during the pandemic?

Our safety protocols are listed on the COVID-19 page (linked here), and will also be included as part of the registration process. Families will need to review these protocols carefully and agree to follow them before registration can be completed.

What resources did NBE use to develop the safety protocols?

One of the major resources we used to develop our safety protocols was the LeBonheur Children’s Hospital/UT Health Science Center’s Back-To-School Task Force Recommendation.

What happens if a new “stay-at-home” order is issued?

If the city of Memphis returns to a stay-at-home order during the fall semester, we will comply and continue to provide our curriculum online, and planned adjustments to the curriculum will be implemented.

What happens if a case of COVID-19 is detected at NBE?

COVID cases will be immediately reported to the local Health Department. Families should report cases directly to their local Health Department. Names of COVID cases and contacts will not be released to anyone but the Health Department. Families of students will be informed about the presence of the COVID case(s) in the building, but individuals will not be named. Those deemed to be contacts will also be given information about remaining in isolation at home for 14 days. The Health Department may contact families of cases and contacts as well for contact tracing and to provide them with information on what do. 


What happens if a student or staff member test positive for COVID-19?

Anyone that tests positive for the COVID-19 virus should immediately report their case to the Shelby County Health Department. Also, if you are a part of the NBE community, please report your case to us. Names of COVID cases and contacts will not be released to anyone but the Health Department. Families of students will be informed about the presence of the COVID case(s) in the building, but individuals will not be named. How large will the classes be?

We've reduced our class capacity to approximately 8-13 students. Classes whose numbers typically exceed this range have been split into multiple class sections in order to accommodate smaller class sizes.

Are students and staff wearing masks?

Yes! All students and family members entering the building must wear a mask. Students must also wear their mask during class. All staff will be wearing masks.

Do I have to wear a mask if I have asthma?

We are requiring all students who enter the building to wear a mask at all times. We have consulted with a physician and wearing a mask will not put anyone suffering from asthma at risk. Please contact us if you have additional questions or concerns.

Will tuition prices be reduced or increased for the fall?

Tuition prices will remain the same this fall as for previous semesters. Despite the increased cost of running our program due to COVID-19, the implementation of expansive safety protocols, and costly renovations to the HVAC system, we will not be increasing or decreasing tuition.

Are classes the same length as last year?

In general, many of our classes will be slightly shorter in order to allow at least 30 minutes between classes to clean each studio and stagger start/stop times so that no classes begin or end at the same time, thus reducing traffic in the hallways and increasing safety when transitioning between classes.

When does registration begin for current New Ballet families?

Fall registration begins August 8th, in a staggered fashion over the course of two weeks.  Because we have a new registration software program, the registration team and staff will prompt each family to register within the staggered timeframe. Only fall classes will appear during the registration process. Spring registration will occur later in the fall.

When can new families register?

Families new to New Ballet or returning after a two-year absence can register beginning Monday, August 24. 

Will classes occur on the same days and times as last year?

In many cases, classes will occur on the same days as previous years, with the addition of Friday classes. However, many class times have been adjusted to allow at least 30 minutes in between classes to clean the studios and to create a staggered start and stop time for each studio. Class times are listed on our website and on the registration platform.

Who will be teaching classes this fall?

A complete list of our faculty members for the fall can be found on our website. As we finalize decisions and agreements, Teaching Artists will be added to classes on the registration website.

May I use the bathroom and use the dressing room while visiting the studio?

We encourage all students to use the bathroom at home before they arrive. Bathrooms can be used, but we ask that you use them mindfully and only if really needed. Dressing rooms will be closed and all dancers must come fully dressed, or change in the lobby bathrooms, one at a time. 

Can I come to class if I am only experiencing one symptom or just mildly?

If you are experiencing ANY symptoms (even in the absence of a fever) and even if the symptom/s are mild we ask that you DO NOT COME to the studio for class. You will not be penalized in any way for this absence.  

What if I arrive late to class? Can I leave early?

We ask that you notify our front desk staff if you know you will have to arrive late or leave early. This will be decided on a case by case basis. Otherwise, all students must arrive on time and leave immediately after their class. Presently, we are unable to host students in the building for any reason other than attending classes. Transportation must be arranged ahead of time for pick up immediately following classes.

May I bring food/snacks to class?

We are asking that any meals and snacks be eaten outside of the building, as you will only be coming to the studio to attend class and then leave. Please do not bring meals and food with the intent to consume in the building. 

Will the Education Resource Center be open?

Until further notice, the ERC and all other gathering areas are closed in the building and are off limits to students and their families. Presently, we are unable to host students in the building for any reason other than attending classes. Transportation must be arranged ahead of time for pick up immediately following classes.
