John and Candy'ce Washington (Arts Programs and Community Services Liaison and Teaching Artist, African Dance and Drumming)
John Washington teaches West African Dance and Drumming at New Ballet. John holds a masters in Education from Tennessee State University and was a teacher with Shelby County Schools for 27 years. He is a professional musician trained in voice, keyboard, saxophone and African/world drumming as well as arranging and composing. Mr. Washington has performed in Orlando, Florida’s Epcot Center, Tokyo, Japan’s Mitsubishi Mirage Bowl, and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. He has played with jazz greats Frank Foster, Dizzy Gillespie, and Dr. Clark Terry. He leads African Dance, music and performance at NBE and is currently the Music Director for the Nubian Theatre Company.
Candy'ce Washington has been a student of dance since the age of 3. She has led African Dance at NBE since 2007 and been a part of Nut ReMix since she came onboard. She has been a Speech Language Therapist with Memphis City/Shelby County Schools for over 25 years. Mrs. Washington has also choreographed Debutante and Cotillions for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and is a former lead dancer for the Nubian Theatre Company. She is currently the coordinator for Mississippi Boulevard Dance Ministry (IMOGA).
