Senior Spotlight: Nokomis McElroy

Nokomis started dancing when she was 1 year old, and has been with NBE for 12 years! She started out as one of our first students in our Dunbar Elementary satellite program, and then came to NBE full time. Her favorite styles of dance are Flamenco, Hip Hop, and Jazz. Nokomis has accepted a full scholarship to Christian Brothers University and intends to major in nursing so that she can become a traveling midwife.

Q: What advice would you give to a young dancer?

A: Never give up! It gets harder as you get older, but God never gives you anything you can’t handle - only things He knows will strengthen you and make you a better person.

Q: What is your favorite memory at New Ballet?

A: Performing at MLK 50 in front of Bernice King.

Q: What is your funniest memory at New Ballet?

A: Everyone attending Katie’s pool party and laughing and joking with each other.

Q: Why is New Ballet special to you?

A: [New Ballet] gave me a home to express my deep, bottled up emotions while dancing that I couldn’t express anywhere else.
