Type: Paid

Term: 40 weeks with benefits

Post Date: 6/5/19

New Ballet Ensemble and School (NBES) is a thriving after school dance program in the heart of Memphis, bringing youth together by providing equitable access to excellence in dance training. In 2014, we were awarded the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, recognizing the country’s best creative youth development programs for using engagement in the arts and the humanities to increase self-direction, academic achievement, graduation rates, and college enrollment. Read more here. NBES collaborates with principals through school residencies in alignment with the goals of the school, active community partnerships with artists of all ages and cross sector relationships to create a network of service providers for families.

The organization is home to Lil Buck and has received terrific reviews in the NY Times for our annual performance of Nut Remix and the Washington Post for performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. We are hailed by the Memphis Chamber of Commerce as a “cultural treasure”.

NBES Teaching and Performing Artists lead our efforts in education partnerships and school residencies. Teaching and Performing Artists work on 36-40 week contracts, on salary with benefits and paid leave for funded professional development, including with American Ballet Theater School, Dance Education Laboratory, and the National Dance Institute (NYC, NY). Teaching Artists may perform alongside students in professionally staged productions. The season includes three mainstage productions annually, school tours, and performance collaborations in locations throughout the area. Guest choreographers include Francesca Harper, Elizabeth Corbett Frankfurt Ballet, Uri Sands, Kim Jones and Blakeley White McGuire. There are opportunities to develop choreography on students and fellow Teaching and Performing Artists.

Position includes teaching diverse dance genres in K-12 schools, at the main studio facility and performance in schools and on the mainstage with students.  Administrative hours are also included in the position.

Artists applying should demonstrate a strong teaching and/or performing ability, excellent listening skills, empathic qualities, maturity and a love for working with children and youth. Artists at New Ballet prioritize the mission and the students. The position requires a high technical level of ballet and/or modern dance, the ability to teach varying levels of dance, including early childhood, as well as ability to lead rehearsals and set choreography. Versatility is a plus at New Ballet. A history of work in public school settings and/or professional company credentials or BFA in dance strongly desired.
