Educators can apply for funding to the Tennessee Arts Commission for mini grants and residencies to bring New Ballet to the school. Contact Ann Brown at the TAC for more information or call us at (901) 726-9225 ext 224.
School Performances
Focusing equally on diversity and excellence, New Ballet develops relationships with Title 1 Memphis City Schools, bringing instruction and live performances to children across Memphis and the Mid-South. This season, between 10,000-15,000 children will be reached through school performances. This program brings ballet to life for students, many who have never seen a live performance and have not been exposed to the performing arts.
New Ballet provides educators with a pre-performance curriculum. This Teacher’s Guide includes pre-performance materials designed to engage the students in activities such as connecting each character to the instrument used to represent them, writing criticisms of the performance, as well as comprehensive biographical information on the composer, Sergi Prokofiev. Email Katie for a copy of the curriculum.
There is something for every child in Peter and the Wolf, including Modern Dance, Hip Hop, Jazz and Ballet. Because the professional Ensemble of New Ballet is made up of young Memphis dancers from all backgrounds, children will find role models on the stage and in the workshops that follow, where they have the opportunity to learn and demonstrate for their peers, the very dances just performed.
High School and Middle School students will discover the African origins of Hip Hop in an exciting and high energy performance to drums and instrumental music.
If you are interested in bringing New Ballet to your school or organization, please contact Katie Smythe or Carrie Vaughan at 901.726.9225.
"New Ballet was the best ballet program I have seen in the twenty-nine years I have taught at Dogwood School! The children were able to relate to and actively participate in the presentation. They became excited about ballet, and many wanted to know more about dancing and learn to dance themselves. I would recommend this presentation to any school!" Mrs. Miller, Teacher-4th Grade
"This is the best and most engaging arts performance that has visited Bruce Elementary, a fairly arts saavy school. The incorporation of Camille Saint Saens' The Dying Swan as a hip hop piece lets the children know that this style of movement which is so familiar to them (Jookin') is a valid form of self expression. They were riveted!" Terry Starr, Orff Teacher, Bruce Elementary.
If your organization or company is interested in partnering with New Ballet, please contact the studios at 901.726.9225.
