New Ballet in the Community
Schools as Partners
Focusing equally on diversity and excellence, New Ballet develops relationships with community organizations, local schools, and corporations, bringing instruction and live performances to children and adults across Memphis and the Mid-South. Last season, New Ballet reached over 20,000 Mid-Southerners through performances.
"New Ballet was the best ballet program I have seen in the twenty-nine years I have taught at Dogwood School! The children were able to relate to and actively participate in the presentation. They became excited about ballet, and many wanted to know more about dancing and learn to dance themselves. I would recommend this presentation to any school!"
~Mrs. Miller, 4th Grade Teacher at Dogwood School
New Ballet has worked with leader, Lori Phillips since 2008 to bring excellence in the arts to children in school settings. With a state of the art ballet and dance studio, a parent resource center and, piano program, Belle Forest is committed to arts education and a two generation approach. NBE is actively seeking corporate or foundation investment to build a satellite at Belle Forest Community School.
Since 2008, NBE has been in residence at Dunbar Elementary in Orange Mound. Students have grown into NBE midtown studios and "high arts concentration" schools with a history of excellence in education (Colonial Middle School for the Performing and Fine Arts and Overton High School for the Performing and Fine Arts). Dunbar graduates have performed with the great Yo- Yo Ma and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, The National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and consistently with NBE, working 20+ hours in the studios after school and on Saturdays. Thanks to Dr. Anniece Gentry's leadership, NBE is in our seventh year of active engagement in this neighborhood school. ArtsMemphis will help NBE launch the Family Resource Center in 2015-16. Funders include founding partner, The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis as well as the Women's Foundation, The Briggs Foundation and Hoehnberg Family Foundation.
A new partnership in Binghampton at the Lester Community Center has been built soley on the genre of Urban Dance. Urban Dance participants will matriculate into NBE studios where more resrouces for Dance Education are accessible.
Family Resource Center
The Aspen Institute publication (Ascend) states in their Two Generation Playbook that children and parents' learning and growing together “puts the whole family on a path to economic security”.
The NBE Family Resource Center at Dunbar Elementary School will partner with Memphis health and human service organizations and corporations to help build socio-emotional and economic supports for families in Orange Mound. (Funded by ArtsMemphis)
New Ballet welcomes Family Resource Co-ordinator, John Washington. John has led African drumming and dance at NBE since 2007, originally as a founding member of the ArtsMemphis CommunityDanceSpace (at NBE) partner.
